The most beautiful things in the universe can neither be seen nor touched. They can only be felt in the heart. If we think about it – all we need to do it open our hearts, have open-mindedness and humility, and anyone and everyone can feel Swami’s presence today in the subtle body. His love flows like the Ganges even today.
Reams have been written about Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba. I have also written few volumes of His biography. But even today, if someone asked me what do you know about Sri Sathya Sai Baba and my reply would be nothing! I know Him only as love and compassion and nothing beyond.
When we are in crisis and distress, it is only God and God alone, Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba, who will come to our rescue. Draupadi appealed to Krishna. But did you know Krishna never appeared there? Swami went on to explain this beautifully. While in the films these days, this episode is shown as if Krishna appeared on some staircase, lifting up His hand and sari materialises from His palm and clothes Draupadi. Nothing like that actually happened. Nobody saw Krishna. Even Draupadi did not see Krishna. But everybody saw that her sari became inexhaustible.
Hrudaya Dharma is more important than the logic of the mind. Consider the cases of Bheeshma in Mahabharata and Vibheeshana in Ramayana. Bheeshma, in spite of being fully aware of Dharma and Adharma, chose to side the Kauravas. Vibeeshana, on the other hand, followed Hrudaya Dharma and joined the side of Rama where Dharma lay.
I would like to recollect what Swami said in a discourse in Prem Deep sometime back. After granting interviews to families of our old students on two weekends, Swami was saying, “I am very happy that I met so many of our alumni with their families. But there was one expectation, which remained in my heart, unfulfilled. Everybody asked for some material benefit. Everybody asked about their families. But no one asked what can I do for You Swami? How can I get closer to You? How can I realise God?”
I would like to recall an incident when Swami recognised such an effort, which was made for an offering to Him. When I was the Warden of Prashanthi Nilayam hostel, Swami was once distributing watches to students in Mandir. Suddenly, He stopped the distribution and called for His car and went out. We were surprised as to why He suddenly did this. But when we came to know the background, we were thrilled.
One on occasion, when Swami was addressing a group of devotees, I was fortunate to be a part of that session. Swami said, “Do you think that I am always only in Anandam or Muddenahalli? After I left My physical body, I am in a different loka, which is the highest loka in the cosmos i.e. Satya Loka. Most evolved souls such as the Saptarishis are always surrounding Me there in the Satya Loka. But now for the sake of My Mission, most of the time I am staying in Muddenahalli.”
Swami then explained how selfless acts of service benefit the person who renders them, at three levels, citing the example of these children who worked for Sai Annapoorna. For one, at an individual level, the service was rendered for themselves as Sai Annapoorna or Vidyadeep were constructed for their benefit. Two, as a result of their meritorious acts, they earned punya. And three, by offering these acts of service to Swami, they got unattached to the actions they performed, which would help them to escape the cycle of life.
You may ask, why the 30 schools in each of the districts of Karnataka? Well, because Karnataka has the great fortune of hosting the third Avatar in the series of Sai Avatars, Prema Sai. He is going to come to the Mandya campus that Swami has established – the Sri Satya Sai Sharada Niketanam. “I am doing all this for Prema Sai. This subtle form, till 2022, is the transition between Sathya Sai physical form and Prema Sai physical form,” He had once explained.
While we were performing the Bhoomi Pooja for the Sathya Sai Premaniketanam School in Bijapur district, Swami gave instructions to the Chief Architect about how the prayer hall and auditorium should be. Swami did not mention anything about the school building. The architect, gathering his nerves, asked, “Swami, why such a huge prayer hall for a school?”
Swami’s reply to this simple questions revealed how long-term His plans truly were! While our understanding of His work and mission was limited, His plans transcended time, as we typically comprehended it.
On one hand, Sri Krishna has said, “Those who understand the inner significance of My descent shall be liberated.” While on the other, Sai Krishna has said, “Don’t attempt to understand Me. Experience Me and be blissful”. What exactly should we do then? Thankfully, our dear Lord Sai Krishna has given a way out of this spiritual conundrum too. The answer lies in the simple annotation that He has often reiterated – If you experience Me, you would be liberated.
But soon the time for rejoicing came, as Swami came back! Not that He ever went anywhere. We have all heard and/or read in the Bible that Jesus Christ came back after three days – that is termed as resurrection. Four months after He left the body, Swami appeared to me. It was July 2011
It is solely His grace that I continue to sit at His Lotus Feet, especially at a time when millions of His devotees across the world think He’s left His mortal coils and that He’s not there. What can I say – I am ever thankful to His Love and grace – Sri Narasimha Murthy
We have reached the fag-end of the year. The Lunar month of Margaseersha has begun. In the Gregorian calendar, the Lunar month of Margasheersha starts around mid – December and lasts till mid- January. In Bhagwad Gita, Lord Krishna declared that among all months, He is the month of Margasheersha (Maasanam Margashirsoham).
When Anjaneyulu’s wife saw Raju, she was extremely worried and asked Him, “Sathyam, my dear child, what is the matter?” To that Raju replied, “I am not Sathyam, I am Sai Baba.
Sri Anjaneyulu’s devotion to Bhagawan was a practical example of living by the prescription for liberation in the age of Kali as given in Upanishads – “Kalau Sankeertya Keshavam” (Singing the glory of the Lord).
The scriptures in India extol the Divine Leelas of the Lord which are beyond human comprehension that signify His love for His children. The formless God Almighty takes a physical form and descends in a human form
